Exempt FBT Status

Question:

Can I use my Meal Entertainment Card for take away or home delivered meals if I am in lockdown?

Answer:

Paywise takes direction from the ATO on any changes to FBT guidelines. Presently, the advice is that no adjustments have been made to the guidelines for Meal Entertainment as it was in previous FBT years as stated by the ATO:

“Given the unprecedented circumstances brought about by COVID-19, we will not apply compliance resources to scrutinise expenditure under these arrangements”.

Considering that, Paywise is actively discussing with industry to request the ATO allow the current FBT year to be treated the same as previous FBT years with regard to Meal Entertainment expenditure given the continuing impact of COVID-19.

Until we get an update to the contrary, employees should ensure they are following the guidelines in place.  Those guidelines can be found at COVID-19 and fringe benefits tax | Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au).

Product Developments

FBT shortfalls can be an annoying issue to learn about as a result of the EOY FBT process. Whilst a small percentage of these shortfalls are unavoidable, the large percentage should be avoided through proper FBT management by your novated leasing administrator – Paywise!

Our in-house, proprietary salary packaging system has been developed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of salary packaging administration for all our members, including novated leases.

A highlight of the system is the automated FBT Management on novated lease benefits.

This development was designed to limit the potential for FBT shortfalls on our member’s novated lease benefits.  This was achieved with Paywise’s system able to monitor and adjust post-tax collections at each pay period to ensure enough post-tax at FBT year end.

Since its introduction, the system has been highly successful in mitigating FBT shortfalls, so much so that for the FBT year ending 31 March 2021, we achieved an 87% reduction of FBT liabilities compared to the prior year. This product development has enhanced our product offering and increased the satisfaction of our members.
