FBT Exemption for BYD Electric Cars

Good news if you’re wanting to buy a new BYD electric car on a Novated Lease. Under the Federal Government’s Electric Car Discount, eligible battery electric vehicles, including our popular range of BYD models, will be included in a full Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption when leased through a novated arrangement, provided the vehicle’s drive-away price is below the Luxury Car Tax threshold (currently $91,387).

This means that, unlike traditional Novated Leases where FBT is normally payable on the personal use of a motor vehicle, qualifying electric BYD cars can be salary packaged without any FBT impact, potentially delivering significant savings straight to your take-home pay. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are included under this concession, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) will no longer qualify for the FBT exemption for new leases entered into from 1 April 2025, although existing qualifying leases may continue to be exempt for the remainder of their term if certain conditions are met.
