FBT Exemption for Tesla Cars

Good news if you’ve been wanting to buy an EV. Tesla’s range of electric vehicles, excluding the Model 3 and Model Y (which are exempt from the FBT), qualify for the Australian Government’s Electric Car Discount, which can deliver a full Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption when novated leased, provided the vehicle’s drive-away price is below the current Luxury Car Tax threshold. Under this concession, the typical FBT applied to the private use of a leased vehicle is removed for eligible battery electric vehicles (BEVs), potentially enhancing take-home pay and increasing the overall cost-effectiveness of Salary Packaging a Tesla.

It’s important to note that this exemption applies specifically to pure electric vehicles; from 1 April 2025, newly leased plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) will no longer be eligible for the FBT exemption, although existing qualifying leases may retain the concession for the remainder of their term if eligibility criteria are met.
