Changes to Salary Packaging Benefits

Tax regulations from 1 April 2027 may impact members who currently salary package, or are considering salary packaging, certain work-related expenses.

Some work-related items and expenses that have previously been eligible for salary packaging will no longer be exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT). This change means members may pay more for these items, as they will no longer attract the same salary packaging benefits and associated tax savings that are available today.

These include:

Work-related items: Work-related expenses:
  • Portable electronic devices (mobile phones, laptops and tablets)
  • Protective clothing
  • Tools of trade
  • Home office expenses
  • Self-education expenses
  • Tools of trade

What Does This Mean for You?

If you currently salary package any of these items, there is no immediate impact.

Existing arrangements will remain unchanged until 31 March 2027. We’ll continue to keep you informed and support you through these changes.

There’s Still Time to Take Advantage of These Benefits

If you’ve been thinking about purchasing a laptop, mobile phone, work-related equipment, or undertaking self-education, now may be a good time to explore your salary packaging options and take advantage of the available savings before the exemptions end.

To ensure there is sufficient time for claims to be processed and payroll deductions applied before 31 March 2027, we recommend submitting any eligible claims in the coming weeks.
